1/ SARS (Six cases now in the UK)
SARS, the mysterious respiratory illness that is crisscrossing the globe, has claimed at least nine more victims since Saturday. The disease's overall mortality rate, approximately 4 percent, is roughly equal to that of measles, but the uncertainty surrounding its cause and how it spreads continues to make it a serious public health issue. In addition, the threat of SARS continues to disrupt international business and tourism.
As of Monday afternoon, the disease had claimed 98 lives and infected more than 2,600 hundred people around the globe, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating 115 suspected cases of SARS in the U.S.; and in Toronto, the North American city most affected by SARS, 10 people have died. All of the victims had travelled to Asia or had direct contact with a SARS-infected patient in a home or hospital setting, according to Paul Gully, senior director general of the population and public health branch of Health Canada.
The relative ease of international travel has been critical in allowing SARS to affect regions around the globe. Indeed, WHO has advised travellers to postpone nonessential trips to Hong Kong Special Administration Region and China's Guangdong Province, where the disease originated in November. In part because of decreased demand for the route, Continental Airlines announced on Monday that it would suspend non-stop service from Newark Airport to Hong Kong as of Thursday until the end of May. The WHO has also suggested screening all international travellers leaving any of the seven affected areas in Canada, Vietnam, China and Singapore. Travellers leaving Toronto's Pearson Airport, for instance, are now greeted with pink Health Alert Notices that outline the symptoms of the disease and advise travellers to postpone their trips if they meet one of the following criteria: they are experiencing SARS symptoms, which include high fever, chills, sore throat, cough or difficulty breathing; they have had contact with a SARS-infected person in the past 10 days; or they have visited a public health facility that has been affected by SARS.Ticket agents will also question passengers more thoroughly regarding their understanding of SARS later this week, according to Health Canada officials. In addition, passengers on flights to and from Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore will be asked en route to fill out questionnaires and provide contact information for the two weeks following their arrival.
The WHO now has 11 laboratories in nine countries working to find the causative agent behind SARS and to develop a reliable diagnostic test. A previously unknown type of coronavirus is the leading candidate for the cause of SARS, according to the CDC. The novel virus is present in 60 percent of Canada's cases of SARS, says Frank Plumber, the science director general of Health Canada's National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg. "There is a link," he says, "but it's not as solid as I would like to see it." Because 40 percent of the country's SARS patients did not test positive for the pathogen, Plumber suspects that the new coronavirus is not the only cause of the disease. "It's definitely a new virus and it's definitely circulating," he comments, but the question remains whether something else could be responsible for the illness.
Currently no treatment for SARS itself exists, but doctors can treat the symptoms. People potentially exposed to the virus are asked to quarantine themselves for 10 days to reduce the spread of the disease. So far, thousands of people in the greater Toronto area have been quarantined. Last Friday, President Bush signed an executive order that added SARS to the list of diseases for which public health officials can forcibly quarantine Americans if they do not agree to do so on their own. It was the first such addition in two decades.

3/ Joke
New Baby
An expectant couple were soon to have their first child. Their doctor told them of a new invention to relieve the mother's pain during childbirth. This invention could be attached to the mother and it would transfer the pain she experienced to the baby's father.
The couple talked it over and the husband was anxious to help his wife with her delivery. When the blessed time came, they opted to use the new invention. It was strapped to the mother and the dial was set at 1.
With the mother's contraction, the husband felt no pain. He asked that the dial be adjusted to 3. With the next contractions, the mother felt less pain and the husband tolerated the experience well.
The husband, feeling courageous and noble, asked that the dial be turned to 100%. The nurse did so and the mother completed the entire labour and delivery with no pain. The husband did not feel any pain either, and was certain that women had over-rated their plight in childbirth.
A few days later the happy new family returned home from the hospital. They were shocked as they drove into their driveway to see the mailman lying dead on the front porch.

Any champs discussion points can be addressed at the Master class on the 27th April. The entry forms have now started coming in please do not be the 351st entry! we only have so much room at the London venue.
After the British Championships last weekend we are now looking at a maximum of 350 competitors for the world champs any more and we will need a bigger venue. A bigger venue this time around is now not a practical option. There are many new instructors and Master instructors interested in the IGTSDA championships so get your entry forms in ASAP or you maybe to late.
The championship venue is outside the £5 congestion charge zone for central London. (Its very easy to get to from the M11)
Team events, please try to have Black Belts in all the teams events if possible and do not make extra teams with coloured belts.

7/ Black Holes
Astronomers have found further evidence for the existence of what you might call the Goldilocks category of black holes--not too large, not too small, but intermediate in mass. They have also discovered that these elusive objects may be stranger than anyone had imagined.
Not long ago, all of the black holes known to science fell into one of two classes: the diminutive stellar variety (with a mass of up to 10 suns) and the supermassive kind (with a mass of millions to billions of suns). But in recent years, hints of midsize black holes--ones containing the mass of hundreds to tens of thousands of suns--have emerged.
In the new work, Jon Miller of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and his colleagues used the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton satellite to observe two suspected intermediate-mass black holes in the spiral galaxy NGC 1313, located some 10 million light-years from Earth. They determined that the temperatures of these two objects accord with what would be predicted for black holes of between 100 and 500 solar masses.
Stellar black holes arise from the collapse of massive stars. Supermassive black holes, on the other hand, are thought to form from enormous gas clouds. Exactly how midsize holes are born, however, remains in question. "Three basic scenarios have been suggested," comments team member Cole Miller of the University of Maryland. "Direct collisions and mergers of stars within globular clusters; the collapse of extremely massive stars that may have existed in the early universe; or the merger of smaller black holes. Each scenario has strengths and limitations." The team's findings were presented earlier this week at a meeting of the High Energy Astrophysics Division of the American Astronomical Society in Quebec, Canada.
Meanwhile, at the same meeting, another group of researchers presented the results of a study of a black hole from galaxy M82. Telltale features of the object's x-ray fingerprint point to it being a middleweight black hole. But the investigators found that the object's accretion disk--the pancake of gas that orbits a black hole--is much hotter than expected for a hole of that size. "Something new and exotic may be taking place in this object to heat the accretion disk to such high temperatures," remarks Tod Strohmayer of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. "The nature of these objects is one of the most interesting conundrums of high-energy astrophysics."

8/ Healing stomach problems with colloidal silver
"Thank you for brining the silver on Saturday. He drank a bottle when we got
home, and instantly felt better. It obviously hasn't completely gone yet,
but he has said that its the best he's felt for a long time, as he has
suffered with stomach problems for a few years. He's going to take a
regular amount each day over the next few weeks, or until it runs out, to
see how it goes. I will keep you informed."
Colloidal silver is great for stomach problems as it kills the common bacteria that causes stomach ulcers.
