2/ And this is from our instructor of the year?

   THE BEER PRAYER
Our lager,
Which art in barrels,
Hallowed be thy drink,
Thy will be drunk,
(I will be drunk)
At home as in the tavern
Give us this day our foamy head,
And forgive us our spillages,
As we forgive those who spill against us,
And lead us not to incarceration
But deliver us from hangovers,
For thine is the beer
The bitter and the Lager
Forever and Ever
Barmen.
Not mentioning any names Michelle.

  3/ Belt System
Some of our instructors have been using belts with a white stripe down the middle instead of a tag. The idea is that the student pays for a test and gets a new belt instead of tape raped around the old belt. Our suppliers can now deliver belts with white stripes in all the colours we need. So if you wish to adopt this system then please go ahead and do so.

4/ Picture on the News Update

The news update now goes out to so many people that it takes 4 separate address groups and pictures slow everything down. So for now I'm leaving out the photos and will instead post them on the web site gallery.

    5/ Subtle energy research.

a/ Empty force in sacred space (Pushing and pulling people from a distance) Wow!
b/ Inner space
c/ why chakra spin anti-clockwise when there is an energetic problem
d/ New dowsing technique for greater sensitivity and accuracy

    7/ Massage from a Friend
The way i see it, too many people who train in tang soo do are missing out! too many people who train in martial arts are missing out. Too many martial arts just play, the international federation which i am in is the same, i personally think that too many martial art federations are in for the money and give false confidence in self defence ability. There are martial arts where you have to go through 14 grades to get to 1st dan!!! that's just money making!!

HEY, Grandmaster, a new way to make more money!!! extra belts!!!!

8/ Ki Do (The way of Energy)

After all the Energy research and international interest Master Jacobsen and Master Adlington are creating a new Martial Art called KI Do (The way of Energy). Students wishing to study this art will wear a Ki Do patch on the right arm and be trained and tested to appropriate levels. This will give us the external art of Tang Soo Do and the internal art of Ki Do.

9/ Message from Master Peter O'Tool (Milton Keynes)

Hi Mark

yes I would like to be part of the Ki Do martial art... I think it would be a good and useful way to manage the differences between 'traditional' TSD and internal martial arts, but allow the same students to benefit from both. Most of my senior students are interested in the energy work, but some are nervous about losing the benefits, values and techniques of TSD. My view at this stage is that the two can complement each other and gradually integrate as a student gains in experience.
Many years ago I came across a martial art called Tang Shou Tao (the similarity is not a coincidence!) in Hong Kong... In this particular school they teach the physical... 'hard or external' martial arts to beginners. Once they are reasonably proficient the students are taught PaKua and other 'softer' martial arts techniques.. these are not really pure energy work, but are a transition or intermediate step.. examples are 'sticking hands' and some forms similar in approach to Tai Chi. The students who master these techniques then move on to internal martial arts, studying Tai Chi, healing, pressure points and energy work.....

This seemed to me a very logical and natural way of progressing and encouraged the promotion of traditional external martial arts alongside the advanced internal arts and I have combined a little of this approach in my teaching ever since. I think your approach of combining the two is a good one too, though for some instructors and students a clear structure may be needed to let them see and explain the system. Master Fred, for example, is impressed with what he has seen of DBBAI (as are all of us here).. his concern is that he will have to start all over again and will not be teaching his students exactly as he is now. I realise that this is not the case and that he will be able to make the transition over as long a period as he needs to, but I think this type of concern is one that I have to work with over the next few weeks so that there is some clear idea of the structure, direction, benefits (and possible disadvantages.. though these are few!)... I ramble, back to the point..

Those of us who have dabbled with Tai Chi, Yoga and other martial arts outside TSD (Thai Boxing, Karate, Kung Fu etc) have already seen that our own instructors (and their instructors) have learned the physical 'external' aspects of their art and have never realised (or at least never taught) that there are stages of development beyond this and that it is these stages which will bring us all closer to our goals of centred, balanced individuals with a clear understanding of the value of martial arts... However for many of us dinosaurs, we have TSD written into our genetic make up like the writing in a stick of Brighton rock and it will take significant thought and effort for us to clearly see the way forward and to make the transition from a 'fixed' physical system into one which flows and changes according to the level of understanding of its practitioners. For this reason I think it will help if there is some format or structure, which can be explained to our students and with which they will not feel threatened. I favour a modular approach which allows students to select from several options or specialities at a particular level but which is built on a core which everyone initially follows. This should result in a strong core of knowledge rooted in traditional TSD with a wider, more specialist or more advanced understanding... weapons, self-defence, energy work, healing, etc.. developing around it. The result should be a flexible open organization with numerous experts in particular factors of martial arts and a core of very high quality. Our students, given such an open structure and a wide range of opportunity should develop into excellent martial artists with a wide range of capability and with open minds. This will allow them to take our martial art forward and to embrace change and development along the way...

In short.. yes I'm very interested!

Feb 6th sounds good and I'll try and arrange a Sunday visit to Sawtry before then. Perhaps next week??

cheers

Pete
