Hi Mark
Great Championships in London at the weekend. Congratulations to the London guys for hosting a top day. Really glad that myself and Kay made it over from Kosovo to compete. Kay was so impressed with the overall professionalism and friendliness of our guys that he intends to continue with Tang Soo Do training when he gets posted back to the UK in the near future. Can't wait for the Worlds!

Hello Mark
My guys (and there were more of them than usual) thought it was well
organised, good natured and there will be more of them next time.
The venue was ideal and the six black belts with me enjoyed the judging
opportunity. All in all it was in my view a very good event.
Regards Master Geoff Keerie
British Championships feedback.
All of us from the Cambridge and St Neots clubs had a very enjoyable day.
Everyone was so friendly.
Personally, I found the event well organised and it was a pleasure to be
involved. A special thank you must go to Kieran Mackey, Arthur Fernandez and
their helpers for all their hard work.
It was my first attempt at judging but I needn't have worried, Master Peter
O'Toole was an excellent ring master and everything ran very smoothly.
Well done everyone!
Regards, Paul Capitain

3/ DSI, DBBAI, and KIDO Instructor warning
In my area of Cambridgeshire UK there is a background energy that is negating the basic Ki energy techniques. The energy is associated to the phase of the moon and can easily be rectified. However if you are conducting classes or seminars with this background energy unchecked then most of the basic techniques will not work e.g. resistance to centre lock with heel raised.
If you are having similar experiences in your area please let me know, if you want to know how to rectify the problem please contact me direct.
Other observations:-
Headaches
Cold and flu bugs
Feeling tied
4/ Asthma cure feedback
Dear Master Adlington,
During the British Tang Soo Do championships, I approached you with
regards of your healing treatment of my asthma.
A few years ago, I was having trouble with my breathing, I went to the
doctor and he confirmed that I had exercise induced asthma, so as you
realise, once I joined the Aberdeen karate club, and realised I wanted
to take it seriously, and especially all the hard training our club
does for competitions, on occasions I was finding the training strenuous
and would take mild asthma attacks.
However, since your recent visit to our club (Aberdeen, Kingswells) and
you taught us all about energy, and some of my friends and I did your
Healing process, I have had no trouble with my asthma at all, and I
would like to take this opportunity to thank you for this.
I would also like to thank you for the videos you left with our club. My
instructor let me borrow one to watch and get extra help to learn my
form (Pinian Edan)?! It was a great help and overall I won a 1st and two
3rd's at the British championships 2003.
Thank-you and hope to see you in the near future.
Regards,
Louise Baker (5th gup)
:-) :-) :-) :-) :-)
P.S: When you showed us that energy test with the clockwise and
anti-clockwise energies, I was very interested and went to try it at
home, after eventually getting it to work, I found that when I use my
right hand to find the energy, it shows as positive energy, when I use
my left hand, it shows up as negative energy. Could you please e-mail me
and tell me what I am doing wrong! :-\
Thank-you for your time.
Louise baker.
Thanks for the great feedback Louise and well done on your resend trophy wins, I'll get back to you on the energy questions.
Best Regards
Master Mark

6/ IGTSDA World Champs 2003
After the British Championships last weekend we are now looking at a maximum of 350 competitors for the world champs any more and we will need a bigger venue. A bigger venue this time around is now not a practical option. There are many new instructors and Master instructors interested in the IGTSDA championships so get your entry forms in ASAP or you maybe to late.
The championship venue is outside the £5 congestion charge zone for central London. (Its very easy to get to from the M11)

Grading and Seminar
The 9th March dawned as a beautiful day, but I did not have time to take much notice. This was the day of our grading and seminar. The seminar was to be taken by Master Adlington.
We were in for the first shock when Master Adlington arrived earlier than we thought and took the Cho Dan Bo grading. We did not have as much time as we really needed so there was no time to stop and think. Most went well even though at times we were all doing different things. The major problem came when we were asked to do the energy form that we have never done in class. This was to be rectified at the end of the seminar.
The seminar, as usual, sent my brain into a spin. There was so much covered that it was difficult to take it all in.
We started off by concentrating on sparring. Kicking techniques dominated this section. we were told that kicking off the back foot was not only slower, but also more powerful and harder to control. We were then shown the effects of the various techniques and how they could strengthen or weaken people. This led us to the next part of the seminar.
Work on the specific kicks and their energy applications came next. We were shown that we could send the opponents energy vessel spinning the wrong way which would leave them slower and weaker for a time. Kicks that could be used were the naksee (hook) kick and tollyu (round house) kick. These could then be teamed with various others to make a combination whereby one could weaken then hit the person before they knew what was happening.
Master Adlington also showed us many different strengthening and weakening positions of the hands and feet. We were also shown how spinning the vessels the wrong way would affect any of these. Hand positions that we used were: left over right as at the start of bassai, open hands -left over right joined at the knuckles, hands as above but joined at the fingers and even bending a single to create a strengthening aerial. Foot positions included the aerial created by putting pressure on the ball of the foot (kidney 1 as well as other areas of the ball) and the fung shui stance. We were given time to 'play' with each of these and see how we could use them to strengthen ourselves as well as weaken the other person. We proved these by using strength tests with each differing position. We followed a simple routine: Test - strengthen - test - weaken - test and then some of us saw how long it took us to recover by repeating the strength test a short while later. We strengthened the person by sweeping clockwise across their belt vessel and crown and weakened by doing the reverse. We did find that some had a strong natural flow of energy and thus had to be weakened first. The position of the person in the hall also played a big role. I found that I was stronger the more things that we did.
The Hak Won (Academy) forms came next. We discovered that they were never made to include kihaps. The reason for this is that at the start of training people often use the wrong shout and weaken themselves instead of strengthening themselves. We were also shown that application of the techniques used through out each form and how they apply to a real situation.
Chuck forms came next. We went through the first very slowly stopping at each move to check that we had it correct. The application of the moves was also told to us. Master Adlington then went through the second form with a few of us to correct any mistakes we had.
The final task of the day was to go through the five element energy form that we had not known for the grading.
To remind us that we were still grading, some of us were given push ups to do through out the seminar.
All this and much more in only an hour and a half!
It was truly enlightening.

9/ Tooth decay in children linked to passive smoking
A significant amount of tooth decay cases in children may be caused by passive smoking, according to the results of US research.
The study, lead by Dr Andrew Aligne from Pediathink, a organisation specialising in child health, found that exposure to cigarette smoke was directly linked to the incidence of tooth decay and the risk of having fillings in children aged four to 11 years.
Researchers used data from a large health survey involving 3,531 children conducted between 1988 and 1994. The children had dental check-ups and gave blood samples which were then tested for cotinine - a bi-product of nicotine which is found in the blood of smokers, or people who have been breathing other people's tobacco smoke.
They found that over half of the children had been exposed to tobacco smoke, and this was directly linked to the state of their teeth.
Those who had high cotinine levels were twice as likely to have tooth decay compared to those who had not been exposed to tobacco smoke. The researchers then estimated that 27 per cent of all cases of tooth decay in children could be due to passive smoking.
Writing in the current edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, the authors of the report conclude, "There is an association between environmental tobacco smoke and risk of caries among children. Reduction of passive smoking is important not only for the prevention of many medical problems, but also for the promotion of children's dental health."
