4/ Joke

The owner of a drugstore arrives at work to find a man leaning heavily against a wall. The owner goes inside and asks his clerk what's up. "He wanted something for his cough, but I couldn't find the cough syrup," the clerk explains. "So I gave him a laxative and told him to take it all at once." "Laxatives won't cure a cough, you idiot," the owner shouts angrily.
"Sure it will," the clerk says, pointing at the man leaning on the wall.
"Look at him. He's afraid to cough."

7/ Joke

A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"Hunting Flies" He responded.
"Oh. Killed any?" She asked.
"Yep, 3 males, 2 Females," he replied.
Intrigued, she asked. "How can you tell?"
He responded, "3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone."
8/ Stress

Unless teenagers employ effective coping mechanisms, the stress of exams can damage their health, according to UK researchers.

Psychologists from Coventry University discovered that more than half of the A-level students they questioned found exams very or extremely stressful. Health problems associated with exam stress included loss of sleep, loss of appetite, headaches, nausea and a tendency to binge on food and drink.

About 8 per cent also reported suicidal thoughts.

Many of the teenagers had developed their own ways of coping with the stress. These included talking with their friends, sleeping, watching television and listening to music. However, these activities could put them at odds with parents and teachers as they all mean time away from studying, the psychologists warn.

"If a young person has developed their own coping strategies, whatever they may be, then parents and teachers should be supportive and open. Over half of the people we questioned claimed that they argued more with their parents in the lead-up to an exam.

"In many cases it is the young person who sets their own standards of achievement, and it's usually the young person who knows how much or how little they need to do to succeed. The only person they would let down is themselves," Rob Wilde, one of the researchers, said.

The small number of teenagers who reported suicidal thoughts also reported heavy drinking, drug taking, and arguing with their friends and family. They were also more prone to illnesses and stomach upsets.

Almost half of the teenagers seemed unaware of the help offered by schools to assist with exam stress. Additional classes, revision strategies and relaxation classes were mentioned as examples of good practice.

Students should be made more aware of the help available and shown that they are not alone in feeling the pressure of exams, the researchers say. They suggest that family and friends provide reassurance that, even if performance is not as good as expected, there will be other chances and that doing badly in exams does not reflect abilities in the whole of life.

Dr Orla Dunn, another researcher, said that exam preparation should include tactics to cope with the stresses before and during exams as well as practice to improve performance.

"Planning and revision, not surprisingly, seem the best tactic to reduce nerves in the exam, but especially for those who find exams very stressful, just working hard actually seems to exacerbate pre-exam problems. Those who fare best with stress in the time running up to exams are those who are able to talk to others for advice and support," she said.
