2/ Master Class 27th

Hi Mark

Just a short message to say thanks to yourself and all the other masters for a very enjoyable day at the master class, it was well worth the trip. I particularly enjoyed master O' O'Toole's sticky hands stuff.

Sorry I have no got back to you before now only had a lot on at work and the car blew up on the way back from the seminar. (Must be all that lose energy floating around)
I had a really great time both on the learning front and on the teaching front its really good to be with people that are open minded friendly and want to learn. The subject range was varied and wide with all the Masters doing a great job. Hopefully next time the people from the wilds of Rugby will find us. (Must be all those aerials sending out the wrong vibes.) Anyway both Mark and I had a great day but we both have one question that needs to be answered. When's the next one?
Yours in Tang Soo

Mark

Thanks for arranging Sunday, and your continued efforts on behalf of DBBAI members. I would expect to be accompanied by Master Denis Williams next time. He left the ITF as I motioned Master Woodiwiss left the UK Lee version of the ITF which is different to the one Denis as left (and the one I was in) under CS Kim in the US. Denis is remaining loosely affiliated to the Global SD Association run by TM Kim , our first instructor.
I have worked with Denis and given him a 'taster of two' of our real/modern/contempory TSD and he is very impressed.

I will be pleased to do a session on hyung breakdown in the future. I have considered this hard, and am prepared to introduce some edged weapon work to such a group as well. This would have to initially focus on the practical use of edged weapons as opposed to defending against them. What do you think?

Hi Mark,

just a short note for your newsletter regarding a recent trip to Cardiff
On a recent business trip to Cardiff I was fortunate enough to meet up with Master Andy McCann and a fellow martial artist. I had asked Master McCann to concentrate on self-defence techniques for the session and so was prepared for some wrist locks and take down techniques, but not quite so ready for the rugby tackles and strangle holds that were to follow!
We had a great session working on very practical methods of dealing with an attacker in a variety of realistic situations. The session was very open and we discussed each technique in detail before trying it out then analysing any difficulties. Master McCann is an accomplished martial artist and a very able instructor, so I came away with a great deal to think about and a lot of new ideas (as well as aching shoulders!).
This was a great follow on from Sunday's Master Class as we had discussed the need for martial artists to be put under pressure and to learn about close range fighting and self-defence. I thoroughly recommend a session with Master McCann for any martial artist who wants to open their eyes and learn hands on.
The trip to Cardiff is pretty straight forward and well worth the time.
Thanks again Andy

regards

Master Peter O'Toole

4/ Sad News
From Master Andy McCann:

Jim, Paul and the CTC instructors and I have lost a friend, instructor and mentor with the death of Peter Robins on 30th April, 2003.

Peter a 35 year martial artist and world authority on CQB died after a sudden and unexpected illness. Peter Robins was a pioneer in the research and practice of the combative arts of W.E Fairbairn and others of that time.
Originally beginning with the Oriental Martial tradition's Peter began his research many years ago into Fairbairn et al and was highly graded in such systems as Bujinkan Ninjutsu and Uechi Ryu Karate. Later on he (with friends) set up his own Fairbairn combatives study group in Essex named "CODA" which stands for "Combined Oriental and Defendu Arts". Peter worked for many years in the Security Field and felt that the techniques of Fairbairn's "Defendu" system (with slight modification) provided the perfect vehicle for the differing level's of force needed in that challenging environment. He had many opportunities to experience the value of the techniques in live situations and worked very hard to pass on that knowledge to others.

Peter also worked tirelessly to spread the history and teachings of Fairbairn and wrote many informative articles in such magazine's as "Fighting Arts Illustrated", "Combat and Survival", and "Irish Fighter". A senior member of the British Combat Association Peter also spent a lot of time training with UK Police Officers as he was very concerned at the level of training in Defensive Tactics they received, especially with regards to edged weapons defence. His work and thoughts on this evolved into his "STAB" system which was highly thought of by many involved in Law Enforcement. More than one person has related that the very same techniques taught to them by Peter had been responsible for saving their lives or preventing serious injury.

Spending much time researching at such Institution's as the "Commando Association", "The Special Forces Club" and the now defunct "Foreign and Commonwealth Office" Peter met many of the original WW2 Instructors and Operators and was welcomed by many of these to their meetings and commemorations.

In a world full of tough guys and posturing, Peter was always a gentleman, refusing to lower himself to namecalling and internet challenges. For an example of Peter's writing go to:

If you drink a diet soda with a candy bar, the calories in the candy bar are cancelled out by the diet soda.
When you eat with someone else, calories don't count if you do not eat more than they do.
Food used for medicinal purposes NEVER count, such as hot chocolate, brandy, toast and Sara Lee Cheesecake.
If you fatten up everyone else around you, then you look thinner.
Movie-related foods do not have additional calories because they are part of the entertainment package and not part of one's personal fuel.

9/ SARS severity "depends on age"

29/04/2003

Children appear to be less seriously affected by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) than adolescents and adults, Chinese research suggests.

The viral disease shows two distinct patterns depending on the victim's age, say the authors.

Teenage patients tend to have symptoms similar to adult cases, which include muscle ache, chill and rigor.

However, younger children have milder symptoms such as cough and runny nose but display no symptoms of chills, rigor or muscle pain.

SARS first aroused concern in late February this year when the World Health Organization received reports of an outbreak of a severe form of atypical pneumonia in Vietnam, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Professor Tai Fai Fok and colleagues from the Chinese University of Hong Kong studied the first 10 children with SARS, aged between 1 and 16, who received treatment during the early phase of the disease.

They found that persistent fever, cough, progressive radiographic changes of chest and lymphopenia existed in all patients.

However, The clinical course of the disease was also much milder and shorter among the younger patients.

And while four teenagers required oxygen therapy and two needed assisted ventilation, none of the younger children required oxygen supplementation.

Prof Fok says, "Our preliminary observations suggest that younger children possibly develop a milder form of disease and tend to run a less aggressive clinical course."

The research is reported in the online advanced publication of The Lancet.

Vietnam "free from SARS"

29/04/2003

Vietnam has become the first country to successfully contain its outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

The last new case in the country was detected 20 days ago - the equivalent to two incubation periods.

Speaking on Monday (28/04/03), Pascale Brudon, the WHO representative in Hanoi, congratulated Vietnam for being the first country to succeed in containing its SARS epidemic.

"It's a big day for all of us in Vietnam and also throughout the world," he said.

The Vietnamese government insists that it will remain vigilant and work with WHO to guard against any fresh importation of the virus.

SARS was first detected in Vietnam on February 26 and since that time, WHO has worked closely with Vietnamese health officials to keep the virus under control.

The country has managed to contain the virus through a number of key actions - early recognition of the outbreak, consolidating SARS cases in one hospital, strict infection control and thoroughly investigating all rumoured cases.

Although the country stopped short of closing its border with China where SARS remains a problem, Vietnam has heightened border surveillance with its neighbour.

According to latest WHO figures, SARS has claimed 321 lives in 26 different countries. There have been more than 5,000 cases worldwide.

WHO and the UK Department of Health recommend that travellers postpone plans to travel to affected parts of the world including Beijing in China and Toronto in Canada.

10/ Stem Cells

Your seven-year-old's baby tooth may be worth a lot more than the quarter the tooth fairy left under the pillow. Scientists have discovered that the pulp inside deciduous teeth is a treasure trove of fast-growing stem cells. Naturally-shed choppers could thus provide an easily accessible new source of these sought-after cells for clinical studies of stem-cell transplantation and tissue engineering.
When his six-year-old daughter pulled out her baby tooth, Songtao Shi of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in Bethesda, Md., washed it off to prepare it for the tooth fairy. Holding his daughter's partial tooth, the stem cell researcher noticed living tissue inside and wondered whether it might contain relatively young stem cells. Shi took the tooth to his lab and found that he was indeed able to isolate such cells from the tooth pulp left in the crown.

Extracting more stem cells from the lost baby teeth of seven- and eight-year-olds, Shi called the new group of cells SHED (stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth). In the lab, the cultured cells grew quickly, forming sphere-like clusters indicative of a fast rate of proliferation not observed in stem cells isolated from bone marrow or adult teeth. Not only did they grow rapidly, but when implanted under the skin of immunocompromised mice, SHED induced bone formation--a feat that stem cells extracted from adult wisdom teeth could not accomplish. SHED cells also triggered neural cell formation in the brain and fat cell growth; stem cells from adult teeth, on the other hand, are not as good at neural cell generation and cannot trigger fat cell growth at all. A report describing these findings was published online this week by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
One of the challenges of stem cell research is that nobody quite knows the extent to which they can be used to induce growth in tissues other than that from which they were extracted. In that regard, SHED cells could potentially work better than other types of stem cells because of their youth (and thus fast proliferation) and their demonstrated ability to induce the growth of several types of cells. "When kids' teeth fall out we can save them," Shi remarks. "If they need [the stem cells from] them in 20 years, there will be no immunorejection." Just what those needs might be, Shi cannot say. But considering that other researchers are already freezing stem cells from umbilical cords, he muses, "Why don't we save this one?" --Laura Wright
