Cats come up short in VandyAfter trailing most of the second half, Vanderbilt took the lead, 61-60, on a three-pointer by Dan Cage with 2:20 remaining. The Cats didn't score another point and lost their second conference game. After turning the ball over their first three possessions of the game, Vandy caught fire, making their first 8 shots and taking an early 23-11 lead. Kentucky battled back with a 15-2 run to take a 27-25 lead. But by halftime, Vanderbilt had regained the lead, 40-35. As the second-half began, the Cats looked poised to assert themselves, charging to a 53-43 lead with 13 minutes to go. Unfortunately, they didn't score again in the next 5 minutes and only scored 7 points the rest of the game. Vandy took advantage, and, while not shooting the lights out, did manage to outshoot Kentucky 42% to 37%. Vandy also made 19 of 26 free throws compared to Kentucky's 7 of 9 - which also didn't help matters. Besides failing to score from the charity stripe, Kentucky repeatedly botched easy opportunities, missing 13 lay-ups. They couldn't hit outside, either, making just 3 of their 19 three-point attempts. Especially woeful were the numbers put up by Gerald Fitch, Kelenna Azubuike, and Chuck Hayes. Hayes didn't get a chance to do much, shooting just 1 for 7, due to foul trouble. Azubuike and Fitch both got plenty of shots, but shot 5-17 and 6-19, respectively. On a positive note, for the third straight game, Tubby got some production off the bench, as Lukasz Obrzut and Bernard Cote each scored six points. The mystery to most fans is that Antwain Barbour, last game's hero, played just four minutes and didn't even attempt a shot. Other positives: Kentucky out-rebounded Vandy 41-34 and only turned the ball over 9 times.
