Cats hold on to beat Marshall 89-76

In a game much closer than most expected, Kentucky let a thirteen point halftime lead dwindle to four before finally putting away the pesky Thundering Herd of Marshall. The Herd was led by hot-shooting Ronny Dawn, who hit on seven of his nine three-point attempts and led Marshall with 23 points.

After a 3-point play by David Anderson pulled Marshall within four with 11:50 remaining, Kentucky went on a 13-4 run to rebuild the lead to 13 with 7:50 left. But Marshall kept clawing away, trailing by only six at the three minute mark. Finally, Kentucky's defense clamped down, as their opponents missed their final seven shots, and sealed the Cats' third straight win.

Gerald Fitch once again led Kentucky with 24 points, while also pulling down six rebounds. Many of his shots came at key points in the game, such as his jumper with 2:55 left in the game after Marshall had pulled within four. Kelenna Azubuike matched his career high for the second straight game with 16 points to go along with 7 rebounds. Chuck Hayes struggled from the field, shooting just 2-10, but got to the foul line (5-6), finishing with nine points. He also led the team with 12 rebounds. Erik Daniels, playing in his hometown in front of approximately 300 friends and family members, quietly contributed 14 points and 4 assists. Cliff Hawkins was all over the court, dishing out seven assists and scoring 10 to go along with his 4 steals. He did, however, also commit 6 turnovers. As a team, the Cats had 13 steals and forced 17 turnovers. More importantly, they only committed 9 turnovers, compared with 24 and 16 in the first two games.

Another area of improvement for Kentucky was their bench play, with three of the four subs making the numbers on the scoreboard change. Especially impressive was the play of Senior Antwain Barbour, who connected on 5 of his 8 shot attempts to score 11 points in 20 minutes of action. That is Antwain's highest scoring output since his very first game as a Cat, November 25, 2002 against Arizona State in Maui. Bernard Cote pitched in 2 points while Brandon Stockton added 3 more. Lukasz Obrzut also played, but failed to score for the third straight game. Box Score
