Cats shoot just 27% but get the W

This year's edition of the Wooden Classic was anything but "classic" as Kenucky defeated UCLA 52-50. Combined, the Wildcats and Bruins, two of the most storied basketball programs in America, made just 33 of 109 field goal attempts. In a game that saw the Wildcats fail to put away UCLA when they had the chance, Kentucky shot 27%, while UCLA shot the lights out at a 34% clip.

Eric Daniels led the Cats with 14 points on 6 of 14 shooting. He and Kelenna Azubuike (3 of 6) were the only two Wildcats whose shooting could not be described as horrible, terrible, abyssmal, offensive, ugly, or any number of other negative adjectives. Both players, however, saw their minutes limited by foul trouble. Meanwhile, the other three starters played nearly the entire game: Hawkins - 34 minutes, Hayes - 37 minutes, and Fitch - 38 minutes. All three however, struggled mightily from the field, shooting a combined 6 of 31 from the field.

In a game marred by such poor shooting, let's try to look at some positives:

  • Freshman Lukasz Obrzut finally got on the board, scoring his first two points as a Wildcat, with a nice hook shot on the baseline.
  • Kentucky outrebounded UCLA - though only by the slightest of margins - 39-37.
  • Kentucky forced 15 UCLA turnovers, while only committing 9 of their own for the second straight game.
  • Antwain Barbour, while missing on all four of his field goal attempts, made what was perhaps the play of the game with 30 seconds remaining. UK led 49-46 as Gerald Fitch missed the front end of a one-and-one. As the other Cats hustled to get back on defense, Barbour seemingly came out of nowhere to rip the ball out of the hands of a UCLA player, then managed to save the ball to Hawkins, who was fouled and then hit both free throws to more-or-less seal the deal.
  • While shooting just 3 of 11 from the field, Chuck Hayes continued his assault on the glass, ripping down a team-high 13 rebounds.
