What #1 Jinx?

UCONN started the season ranked #1 in the coaches' poll, but then lost to Georgia Tech in their first game against somebody not named Sacred Heart, Nevada, or Yale. Duke was poised to take the top spot, but then fell to Purdue. Arizona and Michigan State were next in line, but they lost to Florida and Kansas, respectively. So Kansas took over the top spot in week #3, only to be toppled by Stanford, leaving Florida in the top spot when week #4 rolled around. For the second straight year, however, Florida's reign at the top was ever-so-short, losing not once but twice the following week, plummeting in the polls, and leaving the top spot to Kentucky. Kentucky easily avoided the #1 Curse, embarrassing Indiana 80-41 Saturday at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

Iniana managed to keep it close in the first half, trailing by only six, despite allowing the Wildcats to shoot 60% from the field and hitting only 35% of their own shots. The second half, however, saw the Cats blow the doors off, continuing their hot shooting, and holding the Hoosiers to a paltry 17%. Indiana only scored 15 second half points, and only hit 15 shots the entire game, compared to 31 for Kentucky. While 11 UK players put points on the board, only four could say the same for the Hoosiers. Bracey Wright led the Hoosiers with 23 points and Sean Kline pitched in 15. The other two "big" scorers were Mike Roberts with 2 and Marshall Strickland with a whole point, himself.

Kentucky's frontcourt did most of the damage, with Chuck Hayes, Erik Daniels, and Kelenna Azubuike shooting a combined 21 of 31. Hayes led the way with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots. Erik Daniels added 19 points and also grabbed 10 boards, but his most impressive contribution was five blocks. Azubuike continued his steady play with 11 points and 8 boards. The backcourt also shot well, just less often. Cliff Hawkins scored 10 points and dished out 7 assists to go along with a team-leading 4 steals. Gerald Fitch was content to take a backseat to the big boys, shooting just six times and scoring just six points.

Notes:

  • The last time Kentucky started a season 6-0 was the '92-'93 season, when they advanced to the Final Four.
  • The series between IU and UK dates back to 1969. Kentucky has won 21 of those 35 regular season contests. All-time, the two teams played in nine other regular season games, of which Indiana won six. They have also met in the NCAA tournament three times, with Kentucky winning two, most recently in 1983.
  • Kentucky has now won four straight against Indiana, and nine of the last ten.
  • The 39-point margin of victory was the largest ever in this series. The previous high was 35 in a Kentucky victory in 1965.
  • Mike Davis is now 0-4 against his nemesis; but there is good news for the Indiana coach: At least he didn't get tossed this year!
