University of Kentucky
Leftist Student Union
Welcome to the LSU Homepage. We are a student organization at the University of Kentucky that promotes grass-roots democracy, human rights, economic justice, personal empowerment, environmental protection, and the anti-war movement.
Who Are We?

The Leftist Student Union (LSU) exists to serve those who find the U.S. Democratic Party to be too center-field as a means for effective social change. LSU provides a means for all politically-minded students of the left persuasion to engage in meaningful ways of expressing their views, advocating positive social change, and taking direct action for such change. LSU includes a broad spectrum of activists. We seek anyone from the disillusioned Democrat who yearns for the New Deal days, the closet feminist, the ever popular multi-culturist, the gay-rights activist, the tree-hugging environmentalist, the hyperactive anarchist, the rhetoric-slinging communist, the radical revolutionary, to any other stereotyped lefty label with which one may be identified. Of course, we also embrace those who sit more ambiguously on the left side of the fence without a more specific political persuasion. We welcome all students as members and encourage faculty and staff to participate and contribute so long as LSU exists primarily as a student group.
Why Are We Activists?

Leftist activists do what they do for any number of reasons. Some have experienced or witnessed a particular injustice firsthand. Some are following their parents’ example. Some were moved by an article or speaker. Some just call it a gut feeling. Regardless of the impetus for political and social awareness, we all realize the importance of what we do. Positive change is happening across the globe daily because of everyday individuals working together. We are propelled by hope for a better world for ourselves and for future generations. To paraphrase one LSU member, "I want a world where I could lead a happy life, regardless of where or to whom I was born." Join us and join the good fight.
LSU members may be seen walking labor strike picket lines, participating in various rallies or protests, advocating our primary tenets at any relevant moment, handing out pamphlets or gathering signatures, and many other means of political and social engagement.
