Talking of fading glories though, up the line to Knightsbridge. Harrods remains a strange place to visit if you're not a regular. You get this odd feeling of going around in circles as you try to navigate from small room to small room on each floor, and often the department you seek is spread over several smaller spaces. Store map is some help. More food spots than ever in here, including a certain premium American donut chain. No way I can afford a suit or even a nice jacket at Harrods since it isn't sale season, but no harm looking. Most staff on Level 5 have never even heard of Fred Perry, and then I nearly fall over a huge table of the stuff in the middle of their floor. Various Harrods staff run the full range of degrees of helpfulness, from extremely so all the way down to Hotelink grade. Serious wealth in this town. Left along Hans Crescent past a row of nuclear-option luxury vehicles with chauffeurs. When worlds collide!!! Cross to the southern edge of Hyde Park in search of the Holocaust Memorial Garden shown in the A-Z, but no signs to it in the Park and nobody knows anything about it. There was a commemoration somewhere in Hyde Park for the 60th anniversary of Bergen-Belsen liberation last Friday...wonder if it was here? The space in question does seem very well-tended, a small waterfall feeding through from the Serpentine, a beautiful selection of trees, and a mysterious large black boulder stood on its end, possibly a monument, but it too appears plaqueless. Back to Knightsbridge via Rotten Row, which apparently is around 450 years old as a road and was the first street in Britain to be lamplit. So the signs say...the signs that make no mention of any Holocaust Memorial. Evening Standard cover: nutter pleads guilty to beating his girlfriend to death, luring and killing her twin sister too, then up the road beating and stabbing to death a couple in their 80s who were completely unconnected to any of them. Editorials and right-wing press outrage aside, there are some grim things happening here. Next Previous |
