UK Trip 2005
Whitechapel Tube Station just might be a key example people point to when they want to say that the tube is falling to pieces and suffering badly from age. It certainly seemed sadly under-maintained. The older, backlit-lettering indicators still in use there had packed up completely, as had the station announcements apparently, so it took a little bit of detective work mixed with pot-luck for a visitor like me to identify the right train to get back along the District line. But overall, I still say that the people who curse the London Underground should educate themselves with a few days on the Sydney system. Preferably a weekend, or between 7am and 9am or 4pm and 7pm on a weekday. People of London, you are truly blessed. Sit it out for the next five to ten minutes, for those two or three stops to the next convenient connection, or, if you're not on the train yet, take a deep breath and count 180 seconds. There, that wasn't too bad, was it?

Went to drop in once again on Iverna Gardens, Kensington, only because of the Stephen Duffy connection and because it fitted the schedule. One of the dwellings was full of screaming children. I mean SCREAMING. Such behaviour for this neighbourhood! Went up Kensington High Street and bought a small backpack...has to be easier than lugging a suitcase over the Malvern Hills in a fortnight. Next door, the very helpful Cinedu and his Moss Bros/Blazer outlet have gone, some time in the last five years. Tube all delayed, District line overflowing with soccer fans on the way to tonight's key matches. Home via South Ealing, sans cello goddess.

Off now to pack for Brighton!
