UK Trip 2005
There's none of that Cool Britannia hype and garbage here, they don't try to outcool the customer just by being rude...and that's why the place IS cool. The number one word in Brighton shopping and services is "Hi-yer", and while of course it's often probably just good sales technique, at least they know what that is. In some shops in London the number one word is "what?", while in some others there is no word or attempt at human contact at all. This is hardly news, and one familiar with Sydney's ever-more-famous non-service-culture should not really complain, and it doesn't stop London being a great place to be in many other ways, but Brighton is simply better, usually. Maybe it's the whole Mod thing of (mutual) respect. Maybe people who don't support the mass-killing of animals for food also truly DO have a more enlightened approach to the way they treat other human beings. Maybe it's none of that, whatever. It's just good, and it works when you need to relax. London is generally a fairly grim pushpushpush by comparison. But then I haven't seen Brighton at half-term break or on a Sunday yet. If I can organise my time to give in to the temptation to spend a third day there during this trip, I might have to go then, and that might be a rather nasty bumpy ride back down to Earth. As things stand now, this has been the best 36 hours of the trip so far. But so much for all the gushing...you may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?
