My name is Earl Selph, 70 yrs old.  I have always been told that three brothers , named  Selph, came to America from Ireland. I was told that I was a descendant of one of those brothers. In 1977 I vacationed in Ireland.  While there, I researched the name Selph or Self . The only thing I found out was there were some folks from the county Cork named  O'Self ,  Hope this is some help to you.

MORTLOCK ISLANDS:

My name is Keith Mortlock, Kalamazoo, MI USA. (Mortlock1@aol.com) My grandfather George SELFE Mortlock came from England as an infant.  Life magazine published an article in the late 1940' s that made reference to the Mortlock Islands.

The Mortlock Islands are in the South Pacific,
specifically in the Solomons, on the northern edge straight north of the
Manning Strait and the Bougainville Strait. See also Tauu Island, that is
what was Mortlock Island.  There is also a group of islands in the Trust
Territories in the Pacific in Micronesia called the Mortlock islands, the
people are the Mortlockese and the language is Mortlockese.  See the map of
the South Pacific and look for Satawan or Nomoi atolls.  These are both part
of the Mortlock islands along with Etal, Lukunor and Namoluk atolls. These are at 155 degrees east ( I believe they are part of what is known as the Carolines.
There would not be any Selfes there that I know of.  The two sets of islands were discovered by Captain John Mortlock in the ship "Young William".  See
Life magazine for April 25, 1949 for more on the set in the Carolines.
