Spirit,
Adora's steed, is transformed into Swift Wind, the mighty winged
unicorn, when
struck by energy from the jewel in She-Ra's sword.
Spirit
was just Adora's horse before the day that changed her life,
which in turn also changed his. Moments
after Adora had first transformed into She-Ra and freed her
brother from Hordak's Magna-Beam Charger,
the Princess of Power leapt out of the Fright Zone and plumetted
through the Fright Zone Stables, landing
on Spirit. She expected the horse to run for Whispering Woods, as
she had commanded, to warn the Great
Rebellion of Hordak's attack - but instead, Spirit rose onto his
hind legs and by the time he came back
down, was transformed into Swift Wind, She-Ra's lifelong
companion. From this moment, Spirit was able
to speak, both as a horse and, in his new form, as the winged
unicorn. [03]
However,
only as Swift Wind does Spirit gain more power - just like Adora
when she is She-Ra. As well
as now possessing the ability to fly, Swift Wind is also granted
powers of telepathy through the newly-
acquired horn on his head. He can communicate with She-Ra, [58] other flying horses [91] and other
Unicorns, [36] with whom he also
maintains a unique bond with. A bond that was finally sealed in
the
last ever instalment of She-Ra Princess of Power. [93]
It
was revealed that Swift Wind, a surprisingly undeveloped, though
highly important, character was to
become a father, a certainly landmark occurence in the series. [93] His mate, Star Wind
was to give
birth to Swifty's child, but the baby was captured by Hordak and
Mantenna and taken to Beast Island,
as part of a trap to capture She-Ra. The Horde were defeated, and
the baby born. However, according
to ancient legend, a unicorn-child born away from Unicorn Island
will not become a Unicorn at all, so
Swifty's Baby came out a simple winged horse. However, thanks to
the magic of Grayskull, exisiting
in She-Ra's sword, the baby was transformed into the form his
parents desired, though they made a
point of mentioning that they would have loved him anyway. Aaah.
Had
the series continued, Swifty might have been given some more well-deserved
development, but
instead is left as the least-developed regular in the entire
series.
One
of a few things we do know about Swifty is his intimate bond with
She-Ra, just as Spirit seems
to have with Adora (though this is never specifically pointed out).
He has faith in her abilities [18, 49]
and helps the Princess of Power out by choice. [36] Their love is rarely
expressed, as Swifty seems to
be represented as a means of transport in most episodes, but when
it is, it is done touchingly. [22, 49]
Swifty's
role in the series often seems to be disregarded, due to the fact
that She-Ra is the heroine and
he is forced into a role as a supporting character. However,
Swift Wind's powers should not be under-
estimated, as without him, She-Ra might not have acheived some of
the amazing feats we have seen
her accomplish. Moving a giant dome from over the Whispering
Woods [13] was largely the
efforts of
Swift Wind, as was transporting an enormous flying Horde Food-Warehouse
[86] and, even more
impressively, moving one of the Etherian moons to save Castle
Bright Moon from one of Catra's
attacks. [28] Also often forgotten
is Swifty's speed, accelerating well-ahead of Sea Hawk's flying
ship falling from the sky [40] and even defying the
order of time and going back to the past!! [73]
She-Ra
and Swift Wind seem to have developed some sort of destruction
strategy between them as
well - involving SheRa choosing a particular 'move' and Swifty
complying accordingly. So far, we've
come across Manoevre's 19, 36 and 55! All, coincidentally, came
courtesy of Larry DiTillio. [33, 40, 52]
So,
even though Swifty's fairly undeveloped, Spirit's case is an even
bigger offender, especially seeing
as the two featured in roughly the same amount of episodes. It is
possible that Spirit's new-found powers
granted him some sort of extra-sense, as he seems more aware of
Horde attacks than Adora in some
episodes, [05, 11, 30] but nothing is
certain. It is also known that Spirit is a caring confident with
others,
as expressed when Kowl ran off to the Valley of the Lost [48] and that he is
possibly an old horse. [50]
Whereas Swift Wind was 'born' when She-Ra was, it is plausable
that Spirit himself is much older.
Having
said all of this, Spirit is apparently a force to be reckoned
with even without his role as Swifty,
as one Horde Trooper found out as Spirit tripped his vehicle up
without any problems! [30]
Finally,
possibly the most ridiculous assumption made about the creature
is that Spirit is turned into
a bird when transformed - the comment, incidentally, came from
the so-called wise Kowl. [48]
