Bibliography

Unfortunately, there are not many books on the Triple Alliance War. The majority of them are written in portuguese or spanish and a great number are descriptions of persons who took part in the conflict.

There is General Resquin's memoirs of war as officer of the Paraguayan Army. Another book is General Dionísio Cerqueira's accounts of the war as Lieutenant of the Imperial Army.

Nevertheless, the most famous book on the subject is George Thompson's The War in Paraguay, where he tell us about many facts of the conflict until his surrender to the Brazilian Army on December, 1868. Thompson, as member of López' staff, give us a light of El Supremo in his private life.

Another book of great interest is Max Von Versen's accounts. Since he did not  take part of the war, he looked at the conflict in a different way of Thompson's.  As an officer of the Austrian Army, his descriptions are full of comments and details. Unfortunately, I do not know if there is a english version of this book; I believe so, but I'm not sure.

There is also U.S Ambassador Charles A. Washburn's detailed account of  diplomac life during the war.

More sophisticated analysis of the conflict are very recent initiatives, but, as far as I know, they are all written in portuguese and spanish.
