A scavenger hunt is a game in which individuals or teams seek to gather a number of specific items—usually not by purchase—or perform tasks as given by a list. The goal is usually to complete the list first. (Wikipedia)
Even though, there are some variations on these type of activities, the main objective is to let students explore and play while they learn. 
A photo scavenger hunt is a scavenger hunt in which the competitors have to collect pictures rather than items. In some scavenger hunts, competitors win by completing the list in the most creative manner.
An Online Scavenger Hunt is one where people need to find pictures, people, or other things online on the internet.

Scavenger Hunt Activities developed in Web sites, have to contain of course, some more elements, as for example:
Certain design patterns that are planned on the general advices when creating sites, as for colors, formats, fonts, links, etc.
Structure and certain "style"
Links - communication - FAQ or other necessary tools for the guests and participants
Different type of Assessment and follow up activities (products development)
Interaction
Innovation, atractiveness, creativity, etc.
