Andrew and Beda Johnson
Andrew Eilert Johnson, born May 21, 1897, came over from Sweden with his parents at the age of 7 years. On his birth certificate from Sweden, he is named Andres Eilut Jonasson. His father was Peter Jonasson and his mother was Anna Lisa Jonasson. They changed their name to Johnson which most of them did when they came to Canada.
They ended up in Mulvihill. He had two brothers, Knut and John. His mother died at an early age. She was a very shy person and could not speak English. This would be hard for her to communicate with people who were not Swedish.
Peter ran a livery (what would now be called a taxi) with the help of his three sons. Andrew also hauled fish from Lake Manitoba with their horses.
Andrew joined the army in WWI. He fought in the front lines in France.
Andrew married Beda Singhild Hallen. Her parents lived in Winnipeg and then north of Mulvihill. Her parents were Cristini and Alof Olsen (changed to Hallen). There were four girls, Beda, Minnie, Alice and Martha; two boys, Albert and Andy. Eventually her family moved back to Winnipeg. Her father was a carpenter.
Minnie married Andrew's brother, Knut, and Andy married Lily Carson from west of Eriksdale.
Andrew and Beda settled 2 miles north-west of Mulvihill on a mixed farm by Round Lake. They had five girls; Evelyn, Betty, Elsie, and Violet. Beda was a great seamstress. She made most of their clothes out of dyed flour bags or whatever she had and they were worn proudly. She knitted all the socks, mitts and toques. She also made dirndl skirts for the girls.
The house burned down in 1934?. Everything was lost except for their wedding picture and a box of pictures that Beda saved when she ran out.
Beda passed away in May of 1942. Andrew raised all the girls until they left home. He passed away
