Cherished Teddies
I suppose that every collection has to have a starting point. All of mine have started either by receiving a gift or by accident. My "love affair" with Cherished Teddies started in December of 1992. My brother is always trying to figure out what to get me for Christmas. When he was young, I would get ashtrays every birthday and Christmas...it became a running joke. At this particular Christmas, he fooled me. I sat openning a box that I knew contained an ashtray, but to my surprise, it also contained two little figurines that I came to learn were Cherished Teddies. That was how my Cherished Teddies collection came to be.
Through the next six and a half years, I managed to collect just about all of the products offered. From Alice to Zachary, Christmas teddies, and Halloween teddies, Easter teddies, teddies in straw bonnets, ...teddies old and teddies new, I had to have them.
I realized last year that more and more Cherished Teddies were being produced and the theme of the pieces were beginning to become boring. The thought of adding hundreds of new products to my collection each year was frightning. Greed had taken over ENESCO. I had to almost force myself to contine to buy them. At that point, I knew that I no longer received any pleasure from collecting Cherished Teddies. I went through and carefully selected fifty Cherished Teddies that I really liked. Those were the keepers. Gifts from others were saved, members pieces, and special event figurines were sacred but nothing else was beyond selling. I offered older pieces to members of my local Cherished Teddies club and placed groupings on eBay to sell. They have dwindled down quite a bit but I still have more Cherished Teddies than I want.
I still see a Cherished Teddies figurine every now and then that I will purchase but it has to be something out of the ordinary. Collecting should be enjoyable and bring pleasure...Cherished Teddies no longer hold that distinction.
