| Anyone can compete in the sport of demolition derby. Most promoters do require that drivers be 18 years old or get their parent's permission. There are many sites on the internet with tips to make your car tough. Two of my favorites are www.wecrash.com and www.derbypro.com You'll find lots of helpful people there. This page just has some of the tips I think will make things easier. | ||||||||||||||||
| Tip # 1 The Car | ||||||||||||||||
| Finding good cars is getting harder and harder. Most people will tell you that mid 70s are the best cars for derby because they have lots of metal, good bumpers, and good frames. Cruising the country side is a good way to find a car. If you see one in a field, leave a note or talk to the farm owner. Many farms will have a line of dead cars sitting in a field somewhere. I have had good luck with assisted living homes. It seems like older people like bigger cars which are great for derbying. Just casually mention that you like their car and would like to buy it if they ever want to sell it. Junkyards are another source for cars but can be expensive. If you buy from them, offer to strip the car there and tell them you'll give them the extra parts so they can sell them. It might make them lower the price a little. | ||||||||||||||||
| Tip #2 The Rules | ||||||||||||||||
| Maybe this should be #1. You should get a copy of the rules as soon as possible. Some derbies don't let certain cars run and you want to make sure you don't spend money on a car you can't use. If the rules for the year haven't come out yet, get the rules from the last year and call the promotor and ask if any rules have changed. It is surprising how many people have to change somthing on their cars the day of the event simply because they didn't read the rules. It is much easier to build the car to the rules than to have to change the car because you didn't pay attention. | ||||||||||||||||
| Tip #3 Get Help | ||||||||||||||||
| I like to do everything myself but someone else will always see something you missed. Besides, they'll enjoy it! | ||||||||||||||||
| Race Day Tips | ||||||||||||||||
| * Get there early so you can get a good pit and fix anything you missed. * Bring lots of water so you don't get dehydrated and make yourself sick. Your stomach will probably be a little queasy anyways espeacially if it's your first derby. * Bring lots of tools and extra parts for the car and a first aid kit for you. * Wear long pants! Shorts should be outlawed in the pit area. * Wear a full face helmet. Open face helmets are allowed in many derbies but are a good way to lose teeth. * Don't be afraid to ask questions during the pit meeting. Someone else is probably wondering the same thing you are. |
