the story of UNCA BRY |
BACKGROUND Those of you who know me as a guitar player are in for a surprise, but I also play bass. In fact, the bass has been my primary instrument for the past 2+ years! However, I have been playing bass seriously for over eight years and counting! I cut my teeth on praise music and KISS classics (quite a combination, eh?) and from there I've gone on to play with bands in five different states. STYLE i listen to many different styles of music and like many other serious musicians, try to find ways to incorporate different influences and techniques into my own style. Personally, I think some of the best bass players in the world are Gospel bass players. These guys have a tremendous understanding of dynamics and countermelody and they know when to throw something in and when to lay back in the mix and play for the song! These are some of the lessons that I've taken from Gospel music and incorporated into the way I play. So what do I play. Most of the time, you'll find me driving and chugging away on the low-end, but just when you think that's all I do, here comes something that you didn't see coming. INFLUENCES Allright, this is the part you've been waiting for! GENE SIMMONS - Hasn't he influenced everyone? GEDDY LEE - My friends made my play "Tom Sawyer" until my fingers bled! JEFF PILSON - Original bass player in Dokken/ currently with George Lynch. Jeff is the epitome of how a rock bass player should support the song! DAVE ELLEFSON- Megadeth- Dave has redefined what it means to be a metal bass player. He can "crush" your chest with his tone and interlocks with the guitar players better than anyone in the business! He knows when and how to shred. He is a really cool guy, too! EDDIE JACKSON- Queensryche- Anyman who can riff with Michael Wilton and Chris DeGarmo has got to be phenomenal! Anyway, no one else could look as cool as Eddie does when he just stands there and plays. He IS the BASSMAN!!!!!!!! TOM PETERSON- Cheap Trick- Anyman who says, "Four strings aren't enough for me, I want 12!" is my hero! Beyond that, he is one of most talented, overlooked bass players in rock! Listen to some Cheap Trick if you doubt me! JOHN ENTWISTLE (R.I.P.)- The Who- "The Ox" was the original rock bass player! He wasn't just some cardboard cut-out labeled "bass player". He was an essential ingredient in the Who. Nobody else could ever have done what he did. P-NUT- 311- P-Nut knows how to interact with the drummer and how to fit what he plays into the drum part so tightly it can be hard to distinguish them. He also plays some great, loose, lyrical stuff when its appropriate. I never was really interested in slapping until I heard P-Nut! DUFF MCKAGAN- Guns N Roses- Duff has some of the best rock bass tone I've ever heard! He gets bonus points for putting up with Axl! Who said bass players aren't the salt of the earth!!! ADAM CLAYTON- U2- If you HAVE TO play pop music, there's nobody better than Adam. |
