*There are lots of different types of antidepressants out there. This section is going to explain the different types and how they work.*
How long til they kick in?
Usually it takes a couple of weeks for the antidepressants to start working biologically, but some people start feeling better immediatly. The first sign of them beginning to work though, is when you suffering with the side effects. Don't let this put you off though as the worst is usually over within a matter of weeks, which is nothing if you've been going through hell for months or years.
Types of antidepressants
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) - Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) - Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) MAOI These aren't used all that often now because frequently you have to follow a special diet. They are still very effective which is why they are used when other forms of medication haven't worked.
SSRI They cause fewer side effects than TCAs or the older MAOIs, and so many people find them easier to take. They are also very effective as antidepressants. However, they can cause sexual problems, anxiety in rare occasions. TCA Most TCAs have horrible side effects like sleepiness, blurred vision and weight gain, unfortunately. Also they are dangerous if overdosed on.
