Under the title "Famous Films", Warren released "THE HORROR OF PARTY BEACH", "CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN / HORROR OF DRACULA" (both 1964) and "THE MOLE PEOPLE" (1965). The movies were recreated in comic book style (see example pages), using frame blow-ups with dialog balloons. Russ Jones put the mags together, with an assist from Wally Wood, Maurice Whitman and others. Popular in Europe and Latin America, the fumetti style books never caught on in the US.
Future Oscar™ winning make-up artist Dick Smith teamed up with Jim Warren to produce the "Do-It-Yourself MONSTER MAKE-UP Hand Book" (1965). Aimed at kids, the mag featured step-by-step photo illustrated guides for producing several monstrous faces, from the simple to the more advanced "Mr. Hyde" make-up seen on the cover. The contents of the mag were reissued, in paperback form, by Imagine Inc. in 1985. "On The Scene presents SUPER HEROES" (no. 1, Oct. 1966). The mid '60s Batman craze prompted this Warren one-shot which had one new article on the upcoming "Batman" (1966) feature film, plus reprint articles (from Warren's "Screen Thrills Illus.") on the super hero serials of the '30s and '40s, such as Columbia's "Batman" and Universal's "Flash Gordon". Following in the footsteps of MAD, in 1964 and 1965 Warren reprinted the best articles from FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND magazine in a series of books published by Paperback Library. They didn't catch on and the series was dropped after number three. |
