What is Unification?

By “Unifying” the Wiseburn Elementary School District (K-8), the residents of the Wiseburn Community will be able to legally create and control the type and quality of education for grades from Kindergarten (K) through Twelfth grade (12th). The law spells out the steps that need to be taken to initiate the unification process. Citizens for a Wiseburn Unified School District initiated this process to provide our kids with a safe, excellent quality academic high school consistent with the current Wiseburn District Schools.
Why should I support unification?

A Wiseburn Unified School District will do more than provide our kids with a better option for high school right in the community, it will also create a stronger school district for our students—Wiseburn can continue to provide quality education to our high school students that it provides to our elementary school students.  By unifying we will:

• Establish a unified school district that will be responsive to the unique needs of our student
population, providing safe, small, academically successful schools.
• Provide a coordinated, sequential educational program for our children from preschool through
    twelfth grade.
• Increase collaboration between elementary staff, secondary staff, and the community in our pursuit
of national, state, county and local educational goals.
• Create a unified educational system whereby educational expectations, and accountability are driven
by a single Board of Trustees and a single administration representing the Wiseburn Community.
• Provide a more effective use of district resources
What is Measure U?

If approved by Wiseburn voters, Measure U is the ballot initiative that will allow unification of the Wiseburn School District. The district cannot unify unless Measure U receives a majority (at least 51%) of “yes” votes in the March election.
How much will Measure U cost me?
By approving Measure U, Wiseburn voters will not incur any new taxes.

Currently, the residents of Wiseburn are paying taxes on Measure E which we voted Yes on..  In order that Wiseburn be approved for unification, we must continue to pay on Measure E so that tax rates for property owners in the remaining Centinela Valley UHSD would not increase as a result of the removal of the assessed valuation of Wiseburn School District from the Centinela Valley Union High School District.

Please keep in mind that whether or not Measure U is approved, we will still have to pay on Measure E.  However, by approving Measure U, we gain a better education for our children.
Will we need a new bond for a Wiseburn high school?

This depends on what the School Board and the community ultimately decide. If the community desires a deluxe high school, complete with facilities for team sports, another bond may be required. On the other hand, if the community decides upon an academic high school built on already existing district land, an additional bond may not be necessary.

However, the ultimate decision will come from the Wiseburn Community Members since we must vote Yes on any bond measure in order for it to pass.
Where will the high school be built?

There are no pre-determined options selected at this stage of Unification. There are several options for consideration. Possibilities for a Wiseburn high school could include locations in the areas of Del Aire, Holly Glen, or another site in the district’s boundaries which extend to Sepulveda Blvd in the City of El Segundo. The final decision will include input from the community  through the Exploration Committee. This committee is made up of community members who explore the different options for a high school in Wiseburn. Please contact us to volunteer for this committee, or to offer your suggestions.
When will the first children start with better high school options?

The Option Development & Selection Phase of Unification (Phase VI) will provide an opportunity to create immediate relief for 5th grade students and students currently at Dana Middle School by allowing these students to transfer out of the Wiseburn District and into the High School District of your choice.  However, nothing can be done unless voters approve Unification in the March election.
What can I do to help?

Volunteer! Volunteers from the community are needed for the remaining phases of Unification. You can also spread the word to your friends and neighbors.  Squash misinformation by keeping well informed through the Wiseburn District Office and communicating with the Chief Petitioners.
Remind your neighbors to vote YES on Measure U in 2006.

Remember, Unification of the Wiseburn School District depends on Community support.
