The Oldest Jug in Union, Kentucky
Boone County Recorder

Union
A jug is a very ordinary thing as a general thing, but, to see one that has been in use for 126 years is a novelty and suggests lots of ideas to our mind. I saw just this kind of a jug the other day and I wondered how many of Kentucky's noble sons had gathered around this simple piece of crockery and while its contents were being transferred to their stomachs, had related feats of daring, recited Shakespeare and quoted from the grandest poets. Who knows? Yes, I say, who knows what stories this old jug could tell if it could talk? It emigrated to Kentucky in 1815 — has crossed the Rocky Mountains twice and to-day is as sound and solid as a stone wall. Its owner is a Prohibitionist and I won't tell his name.
Note: Whether the jug actually spoken of in this article was as old as alleged, the Florence correspondent of the Recorder rose to the occasion. You might be interested to see what kind of item in Florence was older than the 1815 jug: Boone County Recorder 20 May 1891 p. 3, col. 4.
