Kumalla

Kumalla was built by Henry Robb Ltd., Leith in 1956. Kumalla was especially designed to carry pyritic ores from the restricted draft port of Strahan in Tasmania to Melbourne. Kumalla is Aboriginal for Father. Kumalla was sold to Hethking Steamships Ltd. in 1973 and renamed Cobargo. In 1978 sold to South Sea Freighters Ltd. Port Vila with the intention of being renamed Jihad but subsequently on sold to K.W. Truman, Port Vila in 1978 and renamed Bismark Sea. Ownership changed back to South Sea Freighters, Port Vila, same year. Sold to Panamanian owners 1982 (Carthage Navigation Co.)and renamed Avondale. Sold back to Hethking interests in 1982 (Sydney Managers). Traded for further three years. Left Tauranga 30 October 1985 for Taiwan via Ponape, Caroline Islands. Arrived Kaohsiung for demolision by Chia Fu Steel Enterprises, 18 March 1986. Historical Information Ian Farquhar's 'Union Fleet'.
