UNION!
You can almost hear the conductor cry out as the steam train pulls into the station. The women in their turn of the century dresses waiting for the train to take them to the city for a day of shopping, or perhaps they are waiting for their husbands to return from a long journey. The smell of the smoke billowing from the engine's smoke stack. The baggage carts wheeling up and down the platform. The dits and dots coming from the agent's office as they are tapped out on the state of the art telegraphy equipment. The country depot was the center of a town's activities, and anyone travelling to or from town most likely passed through the doors of the depot. This site is devoted to one such place, Union Station in Union, NH.
While the trains still go by, they no longer stop. Passengers no longer line the platform to ride the rails, and the freight building stands empty. The station itself has been a private home for some 40 years now, and is currently occupied by none other than your host. I purchased the building in 2001 and have just begun the long journey toward restoring and preserving as much as possible. Please join me on my adventure!
Come back to this site often. In the near future I will be posting pictures of my progress to date, as well as a summary of my master plan (which seems to change daily!).
The wonderful drawing you see above was done for me by a dear friend's son. Chad Shea is an extremely talented artist and a great kid. Thanks Chad for the great drawing, and for allowing me to share it with the world.
