SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS DATE: Sunday, April 26, 1992 Section: SECTION: California News Edition: Morning Final< Page: 3B SAFEWAY BOYCOTT MAY END TEAMSTERS, MANAGEMENT REACH TENTATIVE ACCORD CONNIE SKIPITARES, Mercury News Staff Writer Teamsters and a management group representing Safeway supermarkets reached tentative agreement Saturday on contract terms that will allow all 800 workers at two East Bay warehouses to transfer to the chain's new $125 million facility in Tracy. If the eight Teamsters union locals involved approve the agreement at a meeting this morning, union officials say they will call off their 5-week-old boycott of the supermarket chain. Teamsters spokeswoman Toni Delacorte said she would not divulge details of the agreement until the meeting, saying only that all 800 workers at the Richmond and Fremont warehouses are guaranteed jobs in Tracy and that the pact offers workers "similar rates of pay and working conditions." Delacorte said the union's leadership "strongly recommends it be ratified." Representatives of the Safeway management group, Specialized Distribution Management Inc., and Safeway were not available for comment. In addition to their job security, the warehouse workers also have been worried about Safeway's threats to slash pay, sick leave, vacation, health benefits and pensions. The Teamsters began talking about a boycott in February when the East Bay warehouse workers were asked to fill out job applications and told they would be "considered" for employment in Tracy. The two East Bay warehouses are scheduled to close sometime in early May when the Tracy facility opens.
