It is important that American citizens be able to obtain information relating to the government’s enforcement of laws and regulations. I urge you to co-sponsor and support the Open Government Act (S. 394), introduced by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) on March 15, 2005. U.S. Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX) introduced a companion bill in the U.S. House (H.R. 867) on February 16, 2005. This bill would require federal agencies to meet stricter deadlines for either granting or denying Freedom of Information Act requests, would create an office to mediate disputes over FOIA requests and would allow citizens to be able to track the status of their FOIA request.
