OPPOSE ANTI-ANIMAL KATHERINE HARRIS IN 2006 SENATORIAL ELECTION
U.S. Representative Katherine Harris is challenging the animal-friendly U.S. Senator Bill Nelson in the 2006 senatorial election.  While Senator Nelson has a history of supporting animal protective legislation, Representative Harris has an abhorrent record.  In 2004, Representative Harris supported animal protective legislation only 11% of the time.  Conversely, Senator Bill Nelson supported animal protective legislation 80% of the time.  Most importantly, in 2004 Representative Harris was endorsed by the Sportsmen’s and Animal Owner’s Voting Alliance, an organization whose sole purpose is to elect politicians who will oppose the animal rights movement!!!  On a side note, this organization also endorsed current U.S. Senator Mel Martinez.  To see a full list of the politicians endorsed by the Sportsmen’s and Animal Owner’s Voting Alliance in 2004, CLICK HERE.

During the 108th Congress (ending in December of 2003), Representative Harris only supported one animal protective bill—H.R. 1006 which bans the interstate transport of big cats for the pet trade.  Representative Harris voted AGAINST:
· Increased funding to the USDA for improved enforcement of the animal fighting law (H.R. 2673)
· Banning the USDA from spending funds to inspect and approve downed livestock for human consumption (H.R. 2673)
· Prohibiting the use of funds for bear baiting on federal lands (H.R. 2691)
· Barring the National Park Service and Forest Service from using federal funds to kill Yellowstone bison
· An amendment to H.R. 6, which would have struck provisions in the energy bill that would allow oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

During the current 109th Congress, Representative Harris failed to sign the letter circulated through the U.S. House and Senate to provide increased funding for the enforcement of animal welfare laws.  She also voted in favor of the Extinction Bill (H.R. 3824) which severely weakens protections under the Endangered Species Act.  She did, however, vote for H.R. 2744, which put an end to federal funding of inspectors of horse slaughterhouses and is co-sponsoring the Pet Animal Welfare Statute of 2005 (H.R. 2669).  Unfortunately, almost all of the animal protection bills have yet to be voted on in the U.S. House.  Be sure to watch for the roll calls of the final votes of these pending bills to see how Representative Harris voted.

Please write to Representative Harris and politely tell her that Florida has no use for a Senator who fails to support animal protective legislation.
