Well if you have ever heard of Christian Punk you most likly have heard of Officer Negative.I was lucky enough to get a interview with founder/frontman Chad Wiggins.I called him in earlier May of 2004.
ULF:How'd it start? Chad:Well it just started by me having the desire to start a band.I wanted to start a band sharing the love of Jesus to people. So I just called some friends and started the band. ULF:OK, I heard that the havoc are going to be the guitar and drums for Conerstone this year. How'd that happen? Chad:The Havoc are just long time friends of mine.Justin, one of the guitar players, and I have been friends for like 6 years now.One of his first bands,No Purchase Nesscary used to open up for Headnoise and us.And Jason, the bass player is my wife's brother. ULF:So is O.N. gonna tour ever? Chad:Ever?I'd defintly have the desire to.I'm in the very begining stages of talking to a few key people about writing a new record.Cause I'm still signed to Solid State Records. When ever you sign a record contract the band has to sign and You individualy have to sign your name to it which is fine.I'm personaly signed to Tooth and Nail Records. So I have the option to release it if they like it or let me go off the contract. So I'm just deciding to release a New abulm and hopefully that will be in 2005 and hopefully we can do a cd release tour cause in 2005 O.N. will have been around for 10 years. ULF:Ok,well I usually always ask every band who is thier favorite punk bands and they usually always say Officer Negative,so who are your favorits? Chad:Thank you thats cool,um..my fav punk bands are Minor Threat,Sex Pistols of course,The Crucified,Blaster the Rocket Boy,old Misfits,The Dead Kennedys, all the famous good punk bands. What Im listening to now,my fav discs now is the new The Scarred abulm, the new The Deal abulm and theres a worship leader by the name of Ryan Delmore you can go to RyanDelmore.com , he is an amazing worship leader.Coldplays new live cd is an amazing abulm! ULF:Cool,my band just stared and I was woundering what advice can you give to my band and others starting out? Chad:Make sure that all band members want to do the same thing and have the same aspirations.Like if some just want to play localy and have a good time,or if some want to tour full time.Make sure every band member is on the same page spiritually. It helps to go to the same church,it helps you dont have to do that. What I highly recommend is to have a band pastor and meet once a month to help guide you through all the different stages of the band. And dont go into debt get criedit cards, dont bu new cars.Save you money and if you want to be a touring musician try to live at home as best as you can, wait to get maried till you and the band can afford it. ULF:What does the band mean to you? Chad:To me its a stright up christian punk band. And thats what it will always be.Were there to have a backbone.Punk Rock is very no deep medafores, striaght forward tell it like it is.And Officer Negative is always, youth that have done that, like this is who we are we love Jesus, were christians and were just trying to speard the love of Jesus to people. The tricky thing is with regular punk bands they always use violence and anger to get thier point across. So when your playing aggersive music you dont want to be..you have to come to people in love but still being bold. ULF:Whats the story on JCHC? Chad:Josh Handly played bass on the first record and guitar on the second and him and I were just friends and when we were writing the music we wanted to write a song that just told people who we were. And what were about and to encourage other christian punks out there. And we just got the idea from all the other hardcore scenes like theres LAHC,OSHC,you know all those hardcore scenes came out in the early 80's so we said that JCHC made sense we just wrote a song. ULF:Anything else? Chad:You know I just started this when I was 18 in July(04) I'll be 27 and Ive seen alot of kids come 'n go.You know they start out at 15,16 get into christian punk and then move on into other styles of music but to all the new kids and the existing kids thanks very much for the support and the love and its cool to be there with you and also no matter where life takes you in your journey.Wheter you get out of punk or if your a punk forever ,when you grow up and stuff just rember that Jesus is #1 and just keep your eyes foucsed on him.
