Leader of the Opposition Writes to the Prime Minister
on
ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES COMMISSION
August 11, 2000

Opposition Leader
 Hon. Louis George

Leader of the Opposition Hon. Louis George has written to Prime Minister Kenny Anthony, concerning the Constituency Boundaries Commission.  In a letter dated August 2nd 2000, Mr. George referred to a previous communication to the Prime Minister, and a subsequent meeting with him,  indicating his concern, and the concern of the United Workers Party, about the way in which Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Matthew Roberts, has conducted its proceedings..

Mr. George noted that although the Chairman of the Commission has given wide publicity to the business of the Commission, the members of the Commission representing the United Workers Party have still not received any indication from him as to the contents of the Report which he has submitted to the Governor General. He noted also that up to now the members of the Commission have not received minutes of the Conclusions of the last meeting of the Commission.

In his letter Mr. George also reiterated the position which he had put in his previous communication to the Prime Minister,  that  “the proceedings of the Commission were seriously flawed by virtue of breaches of procedure and due process, and this requires that serious consideration be given, within the terms of the relevant sections of the Constitution, to re-establishing a situation of fairness which can lead to an electoral process acceptable to all.

Finally, Mr. George asserted that if  re-opening of the Commission’s proceedings “should require consultation with the Governor General, the matter is sufficiently serious that this course of action should be pursued."
