Aggressive expansion by Western chains is helping drive the trend. Theodore Teng, Asia-Pacific president for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, says weak hotel markets in Asia have convinced a growing number of owners of the benefits of hiring an international management company rather than operating independently. Since May, Mr. Teng has established Westin hotels in Kunming, China and Ta Shee, Taiwan and a Sheraton in Sapporo, Japan by taking over independent hotels. The three represent half of Starwood's new hotels in Asia this year. In the past, most hotels added to Starwood's stable were newly opened. France's Accor is also snapping up independents. It will add its "Novotel" name to Beijing's Peace Hotel early next year and take over management of a second hotel in the Chinese capital controlled by the Beijing Tourism Group. Last month, Accord added the Novotel name to the Apollo Hotel in Singapore. Accor opened the first hotel of its Mercure brand in India in September with the renaming of the Guestline Hotel Mumbai in Bombay. Guestline hotels in Bangalore and Tirupati, India will also become Mercure hotels after they are remodeled.
