Here is a grown man who is not very young, who has been married before and he has absolutely no clue about relationships. I wonder about his first wife. He must be one of these smart people who is very smart when it comes to his job but knows little about anything else.
It must have been the combination of Mirabelle's looks and vulnerability that attracted Ray to her. On some level he had to know that the relationship would not work in the long run. They just were too different and she was obviously not what he was looking for. I like in the end how he becomes a sort of father figure for Mirabelle. It is really nice the way he takes care of Mirabelle after they are no longer dating. He probably partially did it out of some sort of sense of guilt but he did not have to. Also he did it because he genuinely cared about her, even though she was not "the one" he was looking for.
