I liked the book, especially the ending, but I think I expected it to be funnier. Did I just miss the jokes? Was it me? Maybe I wasn't reading it at the right time in my life? I just thought that the neighbors' attempts at sabotaging their attempt to skip Christmas as mean.

I did appreciate the satire of the way people try to bilk others out of money around Christmas time. All the people showing up at their house with their hands outstretched. All the money they spent on Christmas was ridiculous. $6000 wow. I am now calculating different things I could do with that money starting with how many years of private school I could get with it!

The ending was a bit predictable. I had a feeling they would not be able to get away with skipping Christmas totally. How funny that the daughter goes away to the peace corp and meets a perfect doctor husband. It was a nice touch the way they gave the cruise to the dying neighbor. I really liked that. I liked that the book ended with the real meaning of Christmas. Everyone pitched in to help, they all had a nice time, and the 2 male neighbors who disliked one another ended up coming together.
