I can not believe how much Mr. Carter's stories reminded me of my Dad. The funny thing is my father hated him as a president and could not believe how liberal he is.

Here are some things that were similar between them.

Squirrel hunting...reading the book was like hearing my Dad tell me again how smart they are and how they hide on the other side of the tree.

Hunting dogs, especially the one that got kidnapped and the voodoo lady told Hot's dad he'd never see it again. My dad once splurged on a hunting dog known to be excellent. He took it out one time, the thing barked and ran until he could not hear it anymore....the dog never did come back....HA!

My grandfather used to clean catfish the same way the fishmonger in the book did. We had a special nail in a tree. Dad and Papa hammered it into the tree and clipped off the head of the nail. They would take catfish, gutted and with a circle cut around their neck area..they'd smack it onto the nail and peel the skin off with pliers. I always thought it was pretty cool and reading it in the book brought back do many memories.

When we grew up we had lots of animals...cows, horses, chickens, cats, dogs, fish (in pond that we raised to eat)and lots of other stuff. Most of the descriptions of caring for hte animals were things I remember form my own growing up.

Those are just a few examples.
