I agree he did typical guy stupid stuff. And I must confess that the several books we have read that have been set in the UK have had EXTREMELY shallow people who over smoked and over drank and over partied...so maybe that it normal there.
Back to Brad...I think the author had to show him as a normal guy who is better than most. Obvioulsy JJ had never had friendships..especially in High School years. I had a lot of guy friends who would just hang out and go to school games etc. I think that is what starts with Brad...a normal young person friendship. JJ does have a crush on him, but still learns to see him as a real person who is intelligent and funny...not just a pretty exterior.
