I once read or heard something very wise that had to do with the commandment "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery".

The author's point about WHY that was considered so important by the ancients was this. They KNEW how much it messes up families when a man or woman becomes involved with someone else. They neglect their family and children. They leave/abandon them for the other person. In a world where families needed as much solidarity as possible to hold themselves together and survive, the temptation to commit adultery was a big threat to people.

Also, the author thought that the personal torment that the people in an adulterous relationship might feel would be avoided if they did not give in to temptation.

By making it a major sin, the writers of the Bible were trying to save people all that angst and help families stay together.

As you know I am not super religious, but this...

It makes sense.
