I think the roadtip his mom takes in an attempt on his mother's part to get something in return for all her years of being the good little wife totally devoted to her husband who gives her no mental support at all. When Linc moves and becomes "her" in that way I think it sets her off. She realizes there was more to life.
As for my own trips, I have a husband who encourages me to find myself. I am sooooooo lucky. He hates trips like that and would rather go to a resort and hang out or play golf every other weekend with his cronies, not travel and putter about for several weeks. We both realize our preferences. We encourage each other to do those things that appeal to us. It is a fair trade.
Her road trip was really fun sounding! Of course, she was rebelling and it bothered me that she chose to send Linc such inappropriate emails...like she was daring him to be as bad (affair etc) as she was. I like how she took the time to paint and sketch. I hav already told my DH that my next trip will be to fly out west and rent a car for a week or two. I also plan to go to Vermont for a week to visit my best pal from high school who I just got back in touch with last December. And I also plan on flying to my other friend's place and driving with her and her little people to Orlando so they can visit DIsney World. I think she is waiting till her littlelest one gets to be a smidge older.
