I think part of the reason that the author made his mom and dad so different form each other was to emphasize Linc's confusion and identity crisis. It also widened the gap and emphasized what society expects from its men and women.

I think in the end that his dad is starting to reach out. The problem is that his mom (and Linc too) just expect their spouse to psychicly know what is bothering them and what they need. Nobody can do that! It is like a test...if you love me then you will know what I want with out me having to say what it is...so who is the bigger idiot? Then, if the spouse does ask if something is wrong, they say know or want them basically to guess.

Marriage is about communication. THrough it, the couples (Linc & his wife; his mom and dad) would have been happier and had a better time.

I do sometimes resent my DH when he does things (not emptying trash or recycles when it is over flowing, not folding mountains of clothes, etc) but I also have to realize that he has to be asked... he is blind to these things unless they are pointed out. I think most men are this way. Not sure why...
