My role this year has changed a bit. First I was working at the Small Business Development Center in Gallup and then after a few weeks there I was assigned to begin the Junior Achievement program in Gallup and McKinley County. From there I moved my office to the University of New Mexico-Gallup branch campus and am currently working from there.
Thus far Junior Achievement has reached over 500 students. By the end of the year we hope to reach over 1,000 students reaching out into the Navajo and Zuni Reservations. I am currently working with a BIA school, a private school and two public school districts. There have been challenges with volunteer recruitment and management as I had never done anything like this before but I am excited how far the program has gone and am hoping that it will continue to be this successful next year. I am happy to answer questions about the area, program or anything else. Anyone considering this position or any others in this area must understand that Gallup is a very unique community and will be challenging for anyone coming in from another area. With an open mind and flexibility, however, you can grow to love this area and the people here as we have.
