UK Chomps the Gators

Sunday the University of Kentucky defeated the Florida Gators 82-62 in front of 24,000 screaming fans, on Senior Day.

Led by senior guard Gerald Fitch's 21 points, the Wildcats dominated the Gators from beginning to end. The home team outscored Florida 40-14 in the paint. The Cats also made ten of 30 three point shots. Senior guard Cliff Hawkins dished out nine of UK's 25 assists, on 32 field goals. "They really look for each other. That's why we've been able to be successful," stated Tubby Smith. Not only did the Cats dominate the Gators on the offensive end, but they won the battle defensively too.

Kentucky ripped down 53 rebounds in the game. The Gators could only manage 26. Twenty three of their 53 boards were offensive, while the Gators pulled down only 4. Tubby Smith's group came away with 13 steals in the game, and held Donovan's bunch to 38.8% from the field. The Gators gave up 19 turnovers due to Kentucky's swarming defense.

There were a couple of bright spots for Florida Coach, Billy Donovan. Anthony Roberson, who was saddled with early foul trouble, scored 22 points in the game for the Gators in only 26 minutes. He made six of the Gators eight three pointers. David Lee also had a solid effort with 17 points, but only managed four rebounds in 30 minutes. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough for the Gators.

Kentucky stretched their lead to 52-29 with a 17-0 run in the second half. During that run, UK senior Antwain Barbour scored eight of his 12 points. Erik Daniels, who had 15 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists, hit a rare three in that span. As usual, defensive demon Cliff Hawkins forced a turnover and took it the to the rim for a three point play. Barbour ended the run with one of his three dunks on the game.

The Cats seem to be peaking at the right time. Tubby Smith's team has a first round by in the conference tournament, as the top seed in the Eastern Division of the SEC. Tournament play starts later this week. Kentucky's next game is 1 pm eastern, against the winner of the Auburn - Georgia game, on Friday.
