Unobee At Taylorsville, Mississippi, there is an indication of an Indian battlefield because of the large number of arrowheads found here. There is a record of the transfer of this section of land to Unobee, an Indian of the Choctaw Nation, as made in the treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. It is generally believed that the grave on the elementary school yard is that of Gentle South Wind, a young Indian girl who was killed by her father Unobee in a fierce brawl. Her youth and beauty made her fate especially pitiable. White settlers marked her grave by a hackberry bush. In May of 1965, Chapter members held a memorial service at the gravesite and placed a granite marker there in her memory. Note: There have been many different spellings of this name, among them, Onubee, Unabba, Annabbe, Nnobbe, but it is believed that Unobee is correct. author unknown |
