Army chief demands disbandment of militias
JAKARTA (JP): Army chief of staff Gen. Ryamizard Ryacudu ordered his men on
Monday to disband civilian militias in the country, a report said.
"Armed civilians are not allowed because they will disturb public order and security.
Besides it is not the domain of civilians," he said after attending a ceremony, marking
the National Police' 56th anniversary, Antara reported.
Ryamizard also said that the military would take stern action against civilians who
insisted on holding military-style training, but he did not elaborate.
However, he dismissed the view that the emergence of armed civilians was triggered
by the failure of the military and police to maintain security and uphold the supremacy
of the law.
"We are capable of maintaining security and order and so are the police," said
Ryamizard.
