Abdurrahman files complaint against Amien Rais
JAKARTA (JP): Former president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid went to Jakarta
Police Headquarters on Monday to officially lodge a complaint on alleged defamation
committed by his long-time friend turned foe, Assembly Speaker Amien Rais.
Abdurrahman refused to talk to the media and went directly into the police detectives
room. "I'll talk to you later after this (report)," Abdurrahman said.
Abdurrahman arrived at police headquarters using his old vehicle, a Mazda E-2000.
He was accompanied by lawyers Nur Chaironi Ali, Suharmono and Salim Muhammad.
The influential leader and patron of the country's largest Muslim organization,
Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), filed a complaint over Amien's recent remark in a seminar at
the Jakarta Convention Center on May 2 this year.
During the session Amien is said to have told the audience that Abdurrahman
extorted money from one of the prospective candidates for the post of director general
at the Ministry of Finance.
Abdurrahman has flatly denied the allegations and reported Amien to the police. Both
Abdurrahman and Amien have been at odds since Amien was elected chairman of the
country's second largestMuslim organization, Muhammadiyah, back in the mid
1990s.(edt)
