Manuputty to Make A Legal Claim against the Government
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Alexander Manuputty, the Chairman of the Moluccan
Sovereignty Front (FKM), is to make a legal claim against President Megawati
Soekarnoputri, Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Susilo B.
Yudhoyono, and head of the of civil state of emergency authorities in Maluku,
Governor Saleh Latuconsina.
Manuputty's lawyer Christian Rahardjaan said his client was demanding an apology
from the government for making an accusation that had put the FKM in a corner.
"[The government] must announce the apology through all national printed media and
electronic media for a period of three consecutive days," Rahardjaan said before
visiting his client at the National Police HQ on Tuesday (28/5).
Rahardjaan also said he would file a suit against the government at the Indonesian
human rights court, if the legal claim failed.
And if this did not solve the problem, then Manuputty's lawyers would ask the United
Nations to intervene.
Rahardjaan went on to say that the FKM is not an outlawed organization, but rather
an organization for struggle that has come into being because of the government's
failure in handling conflicts in Ambon during the last two years.
"FKM is different with the RMS [Republic of South Maluku] that wants to separate
from Indonesia. When the FKM members raised the RMS flag on the RMS
anniversary (25/4), they merely protested against the government for not giving an
assurance to solve the problem of Maluku and the RMS. So far, FKM has never
supported the RMS," said Rahardjaan.
Rahardjaan also said that Manuputty's legal team would go to the office of
Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs and the State Palace on
Tuesday.
The lawyers would question why the government had rejected the holding of a dialog
with the FKM.
Former president Abdurrahman Wahid had proposed this dialog during his period as
president but the then coordinating minister for political and security affairs Susilo B.
Yudhoyono was against it. (Retno Sulistyowati-Tempo News Room)
