The Ball Report

by Simon Taylor

(to the best of my knowledge)

The 2001 Annual Organisation of Planning Students Ball, held on the sunset of Darling Harbour at Port Vista Brasserie got off to a shocking start, mainly for the fact that the rather stupid organiser put the wrong number on the ticket. The deal with this was that when I went to print the posters out, I didn't have an address and he wasn't listed in the phone book. So I guessed a number, that being 330 and then later on, I found it out, changed the number to 207 and all was good. Until I decided to print the tickets out from the old file. I realised my mistake on the 7 November. All is good in the end I say.

Secondly, the rain decided to tease me enough to hang around until about 4:30pm. Emile had promised me a sunset in the price and thankfullt for those that knew that the address was 207 Kent St, we got a good one.

I'll get the bad things out of the way and then go on to say how much of a great night I had and I presume everybody else had.
Number One, the spirits by all reports were watered down which meant people were complaining that they weren't getting drunk enough. I wouldn't know becuase I was enjoying my Extra Dry's all night. Rum was missing from the house spirits list which dissapointed several, namely Geography representative Claire Hammill but you'll all get over it. Finally, my order of 16 tables fell short by one which created the lack of table space. Thanks to the 2nd year table in the middle of the room that managed to seat 15 to a table, a mighty effort considering it was a tabkle set for ten.

Anyway, pre dinner drinks ran overtime, which I hope most people didn't mind. The live music, provided by David Hibbert (who once supported Alex Lloyd!!!) was a great beginning to the night and it was great to be greeted by some proper music, from U2 to Cat Stevens.
As it became apparent that there were more people than seats, Simon chucked a wobbly. But the entree of Thai Beef Salad and Salmon went down good. Another good hour before mains (of Sirloin Steak, Grilled Barramundi and Roasted Chicken) provided some good chance for mid-drunkedness intermingling that eventually brought on the awards. Congratulations or whatever - it didn't mean anything at all.

All the rest is gone - we drank them dry of three of the four spirits, there were about 50% of desserts left over,  the dance floor appeared for everybody to hit the floor and the polling booths and election signs got trashed. Memory blank begins 11:45pm at first intermittently, then full time about 1am.

Most moved on to the Cargo Bar where the night continued on to closing time, not that that stopped anybody.

Thanks for coming. I had a pearler of a night.
