***January 16-18, 2004 - U of R Amnesty International Club presents the: "Conference on International and Domestic Violence Against Women" The conference focused on issues surrounding violence against women, both domestically and internationally. The conference was attended by students from both Saskatchewan universities. Our goal was to increase awareness of the issues facing women both on a global and national level and to encourage students to get involved in their communities. The conference integrated many Amnesty International cases and actions in an order to illustrate what can be done on an individual or group basis to make change. Workshops were offered on India, Afghanistan, Africa, Mexico, Honour Killings, FGM and Trafficking of Women as well as many other topics. ***October 3, 2001, 2:30 pm - U of R Amnesty Meeting. Education Auditiorium The teach-in was sponsored by Canadian Federation of Students and included presentations, videos and speakers. CANESI is a network of organizations and individuals in Canada who are compelled to respond to the injustice, death and suffering in Iraq that results from the UN sanctions. These sanctions are primarily driven by the foreign policy interests of the US and its allies (including Canada). The collective goal is to have the UN economic sanctions removed in an effort to promote peace and security for the Iraqi people. *Maternal mortality rates have more than doubled during the sanctions and 70% of Iraqi women suffer from anemia. *The Gulf War severely damaged Iraq's infrastructure. Since then, money and spare parts have not been available to repair sewage works and purification plants. This has led to water borne diseases and diarrhea has reappeared as the major killer of children. *320 tons of depleted uranium dropped by allied forces during the Gulf War remain in Iraq, according to the Pentagon. Iraqi doctors say this is the cause of the 18% increase in birth deformities and six fold increase in leukemia amoung children. *$23.5 billion was approved for humanitarian supplies, within the U.N. Oil for Food Program. Less than $11 billion had actually arrived in Iraq during a four-year-period - only about $100 per person per year.
