Welcome to the World of Feng Shui
(or my version of it)

As some of you know (and even more of you don't), I have become increasingly interested in the practice of feng shui (pronounce "fung shway"). Translated literally, "feng" means wind and "shui" means water. Unlike what you may have heard, this is not just a technique of moving your furniture around for better luck. Feng shui is the ancient Chinese art of manipulating your environment to increase the flow of ch'i and thus obtain harmony and balance in your life. (Okay, this does sometimes involve moving furniture!) There are many different schools of feng shui and the one I follow is called the Black Sect Tantric Buddhist School, which was brought to the west by Grandmaster Lin Yun.

THE BASICS:

To begin with, ch'i roughly translates as energy. This is the natural, unseen energy that is around everyone and everything at all times. If the ch'i around you flows freely, you are likely to experience good fortune in all areas of your life. If your ch'i is blocked, however, it is necessary to adjust your environment to help it flow freely. You may notice the effects of blocked ch'i in any of the nine areas of your life and applying feng shui principles and cures to the corresponding area(s) in your environment will improve that particular life area.

THE BAGUA:

The bagua octagon is the primary tool of black sect feng shui. Using it helps to determine where the nine life areas are located in your environment. The nine areas are: Knowledge, Career, Helpful People, Family, Health, Children, Wealth, Fame/Reputation, and Marriage/Relationships. (see diagram A) Each of these areas is of equal importance and feng shui applications can adjust or strengthen the flow of ch'i in each area.
To use the bagua on your home, it is necessary to have a scale drawing of your floor plan. The easiest method of determining the life areas is to draw a grid on the floor plan, dividing it into nine equal areas. (see diagram B) The bagua is then placed over the floor plan to determine which space on the grid corresponds to which life area. To determine which way to place the baqua, locate the wall of your house where your front door is. The Career area is the center of that wall, Knowledge is to the left, and Helpful People is to the right. Family is on the left, above Knowledge, and Wealth is above Family, in the upper left corner. On the right, Children is above Helpful People and Marriage is in the upper right corner. Health is in the center, with Fame above it. (see diagram C) Note: This applies to the first floor only. For other floors, the Career area is located on the side where the main entrance to that floor is located. (see diagram D)
