UP admin cites flaws in process by Jayson Edward B. San Juan.
Students who want to see UP improve on its Asiaweek survey ranking last year are in for a disappointment.
While UP was preparing to do better in the annual Asiaweek survey, the paper this year decided to discontinue its ranking of Asian universities. Last year, much uproar ensued when UP placed 48th among 77 participants, its lowest since 1997.
Asiaweek is now planning to either continue the survey, but not on an annual basis, or focus on a particular discipline per year.
Itemized quality
The Asiaweek survey of the best universities in the Asia-Pacific region was launched in 1997 to rank the region’s universities in several criteria.
The criteria were changed during the four years the survey was conducted. The 1997 and 1998 surveys had academic reputation, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, and value for money in its criteria.
In the 1999 and 2000 surveys, there were academic reputation, student selectivity, faculty resources, research, and financial resources. There were also some additional items like internet subscription and citations in international journals.
